The Captain Ranlett-Gould House was constructed in 1848 by one of Thomaston's first Merchant
Captains. This elegant home is listed as a "Significant Element" of the Federal Historical District on the National Registry of Homes. Solid and stately, this monument to the entrepreneurial
successes of Thomaston's nineteenth century sea
captains, features six bedrooms and over 4700
square feet of living space. In addition, the
adjoining carriage house has been carefully restored. Nothing, however, speaks to the opulence of the era and the Captain's appreciation of fine art like the exquisite wall treatments by Franz Zuber. The luminous murals that grace the walls of the parlor are the last remaining Zuber originals outside the Smithsonian. Surrounded by these colorful and wondrous scenes and the extraordinary woodwork visible at every turn, one may feel transported to another time. This unique and impeccably restored home is truly a treasure that deserves a steward who will carry on the commitment to maintain its' integrity in the same manner as the current owner.
